I would like to introduce a place where you can do dark tourism in Yanggu, the center of the Korean Peninsula. The DMZ is in Yanggu, which was introduced in a previous post, right? Today, I would like to talk about the Yanggu War Memorial, the 4th Tunnel, and the Eulji Observatory near the Punch Bowl. (Unfortunately, the 4th Tunnel and Eulji Observatory are closed until December 31, 2022 due to construction. We cannot visit them through this pilot tour, but I hope we can visit them next year with you!)
I was only going to enjoy Punch Bowl trekking, but also have a chance to visit the Yanggu War Memorial nearby, which exhibits a reproduction of the Korean War. Although it was a very small space, there was a course an hour away from the Unification Hall and the War Memorial. You can see flags of 22 countries that participated in the Korean War, and North Korean items were displayed in the Unification Hall. At the War Memorial, images of the Korean War were displayed with mannequins, and it made me sad to see the same Koreans fighting divided by ideology.
If you visit the War Memorial before the Punch Bowl trekking, you will realize why Yanggu is a DMZ area. Well.. If you simply enjoy Punch Bowl trekking, you will only see lush trees and forest paths. So, if you are planning to visit Punch Bowl! Don’t miss the war museum in Yanngu.
